Summer House

This is one of those spots I keep coming back to—and for good reason. Summer House nails that rare combo of being casual, consistent, and actually good for people who eat gluten-free (which, for me, is non-negotiable).

The vibe is California-lite, relaxed but polished. Light wood, white brick, sunshiny mood—even when it’s February in Chicago. It’s the kind of place that works for a family lunch, a casual work meeting, or just an easy dinner when you don’t want to overthink it.

Gluten-Free Friendly (Like, Actually)

Here’s the standout: almost everything can be made gluten-free—and not in a “we’ll remove the good parts” kind of way. The staff knows the menu inside out, they take it seriously, and I’ve never had an issue. That kind of trust goes a long way when you’re eating out often with dietary restrictions.

The Food

Favorites? Plenty. The tacos (on GF tortillas), the salads, the burgers with gluten-free buns, the market sides—everything feels clean and satisfying. It’s not trying to be trendy or blow your mind. It’s just good food that you can eat without stress, and that alone puts it on repeat.

Their bakery case even has gluten-free cookies and sweets, which—if you know, you know—is a rare win.

The Verdict

This is an easy go-to. Consistent, friendly, always a table (if you plan ahead), and way more accommodating than most spots in the same tier. It’s probably the restaurant I recommend most often to friends who ask for gluten-free options that aren’t sad or awkward.

Check my Beli (@graffiajr) and you’ll see the repeat visits. Summer House is that dependable friend of a restaurant. Easy to be around, always delivers, and quietly earns a permanent spot in the rotation.

It’s causal so hard to do 5 stars but I am going to go for it.
